Blended Online MHFA Community Course
Do you know what to say after 'are you okay?'
Mental illnesses are common. 1 in 5 Australian adults will experience a mental illness each year but only 35% will access help. This may be due to lack of understanding about mental illnesses and their symptoms, stigma and uncertainty about help available.
This is where MHFA comes in. Just like physical first aid courses train members of the public to provide basic first aid to someone with a physical health condition, Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) teaches skills to help someone experiencing a mental health problem.
What’s the Blended Online MHFA Community Course?
The Blended Online MHFA Community Course has been adapted from the Standard MHFA course for adults into a 100% online format consisting of two components. The training offers the same accreditation as the standard course.
Course Component 1 – Self-paced interactive eLearning to be complete by Monday 8th November (please allow 5-7 hours to complete)
The eLearning course component presents an overview of mental health problems and mental health crises:
Mental illnesses: depression, anxiety, substance use disorders and psychosis.
Mental health crises: suicidal thoughts and behaviours, non-suicidal self-injury, traumatic events and aggressive behaviours.
Course Component 2 – Instructor-led webinars delivered via Zoom (2 x 3 hours) on Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 10th November from 6pm to 9pm AEST.
An opportunity to revise content covered in the self-paced eLearning program and to consolidate the application of this content with the development of practical skills in a group environment.
What's included?
Each participant will receive their own electronic MHFA manual to keep and can arrange collection of the hard copy when public health restrictions allow. Upon completion of the training participants can complete a short assessment and if they pass they will become an accredited Mental Health First Aider for 3 years.
Who can attend?
This training is for any adult supporting another adult. No previous training or experience is required. Due to funding requirements, this training is offered to members of the Irish Australian Community in NSW only.
What's the cost?
Training is subsidised by the Irish Support Agency and supported by the Emigrant Support Program of the Department of Foreign Affairs. Total cost is $50 pp which includes MHFA fee for access to eLearning modules and manual.
