A 50km course traversing the harbour shore from North Head in Manly to Hornby Lighthouse in Watsons BaY.

Pioneered by Irish Support Agency President, Alan Humphreys, this 50km walking challenge is a symbol of hope, resilience, and the power of community coming together for a common purpose. It's a reminder that every step forward, no matter how small, can lead to positive change and transformation.

Embarking on a 50km fundraising walk is not just a physical challenge; it's a journey of solidarity, purpose, and resilience.

ROUTE

The 50km walk from North Head in Manly to Hornby Lighthouse in Watson’s Bay is a breathtaking yet challenging journey along Sydney’s stunning coastline. Starting at North Head, walkers are treated to panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean before following the rugged coastal trails through Sydney Harbour National Park. The route winds through secluded beaches, scenic headlands, and iconic landmarks, including the Spit Bridge, Balmoral Beach, and the historic harbourside suburbs of Mosman and Vaucluse. With a mix of bush tracks, beach walks, and urban pathways, the ever-changing terrain keeps the journey engaging while offering spectacular views of Sydney Harbour and the open sea. The final stretch through Watson’s Bay leads to the dramatic cliffs of South Head, where Hornby Lighthouse stands as a beacon overlooking the harbour entrance. Covering this distance in a single day is a true test of endurance, but the stunning scenery and sense of achievement make it an unforgettable experience.

Hear from President Alan Humphrey’s on why he created HEAD TO HEAD

I am raising much-needed funds for the Irish Support Agency (ISA) so they can continue their vital work within our Irish community here in NSW. Their outreach and dedicated programs are both diverse and complex, ensuring that our fellow Irish receive the same—if not better—support in times of crisis as they would at home in Ireland.

In 2024, I took on the first-ever Head to Head challenge alongside four fellow participants. Despite it being one of the wettest days on record, we pushed through after a previous rescheduling, determined to complete the 50km journey in a single day. It was an intense test of physical and mental endurance.

For me, the idea of a sunrise-to-sunset challenge is symbolic—reminding us that even in the darkest times, there is always light and support if we reach out for it.

Personally, walking has been a key part of maintaining my mental well-being. The past few years have been challenging, with lockdowns, restrictions, and job loss testing my resilience. But exercise, fresh air—whether in sunshine or rain—and time outdoors helped me refocus on my health, mindset, and overall well-being.

I feel incredibly fortunate to be involved with the ISA and to witness firsthand the impact their small but dedicated team of three employees, supported by a volunteer committee, makes in our community every day. As the Irish community in NSW continues to grow, raising funds and awareness for this organisation is more important than ever.

Please dig deep and show your support for this challenge and the incredible work of the ISA!
